Description

Rice ORS contains Potassium Chloride (major intracellular cation), Sodium Chloride (major extracellular cation), Trisodium Citrate (converted to bicarbonate), and Rice powder which provides fluid and electrolyte replacement and reduces stool output in diarrhea.

Pharmacology

Rice ORS is a combination of Potassium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Trisodium Citrate, and Rice powder. Potassium and sodium maintain electrolyte balance, trisodium citrate provides bicarbonate precursor for acidosis prevention, and rice powder reduces diarrhea severity and improves water absorption in the gut.

Mechanism of action

Restores fluid and electrolyte balance and reduces diarrhea severity.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Oral):

  • 200-500 mL for each loose motion

Pediatric Dose (Oral):

  • 6-23 months: 50-100 mL for each loose motion
  • 2-9 years: 100-200 mL for each loose motion
  • ≥10 years: 200-500 mL for each loose motion
Administration
  • Mix with safe water as directed
  • Take after each loose motion
  • Drink slowly in small sips
Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember; do not double the dose.

Side effects

Side Effects:

  • Hyponatremia (low plasma sodium concentration) - rare and limited
Precautions & warnings
  • Caution in significant overdose (especially children under 1 year, electrolyte imbalance, severely decreased kidney and liver function)
  • Do not use in severe vomiting, severe dehydration, severe diarrhea in infants, shock
Contraindications
  • Renal failure with oliguria/anuria
  • Stomach or intestinal obstruction
  • Reduced blood flow to vital internal organs (shock)
  • Severe and continuous vomiting
  • Severe dehydration
  • Severe diarrhea in infants
