Description

Povidone-iodine is an iodophore with powerful broad-spectrum germicidal activity against a wide range of bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and spores. It oxidizes cell constituents and iodinates proteins, inactivating them. As a mouthwash, it kills harmful microorganisms in the mouth and throat.

Pharmacology

Povidone-iodine slowly releases elemental iodine, providing prolonged germicidal activity. It is effective against a wide range of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. As a mouthwash, it oxidizes and inactivates microorganisms on the oral mucosa, preventing infections.

Mechanism of action

Prevents infection by killing harmful microorganisms in the mouth.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Mouthwash/Gargle):

  • Use undiluted or diluted with equal volume of warm water
  • Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
  • Repeat up to four times daily for up to 14 consecutive days

Pediatric Dose (>6 years):

  • Same as adult

  • Check the label before use
  • Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking for at least 30 minutes after rinsing
  • Do not swallow the solution
Missed dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
