Description
Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic produced by Actinoplanes teichomyceticus. It binds to D-alanyl-D-alanine residues in the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting peptidoglycan synthesis and preventing cell wall formation. It has a spectrum similar to vancomycin.

Pharmacology
Teicoplanin binds to D-alanyl-D-alanine residues in the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting peptidoglycan synthesis. It is effective against Gram-positive bacteria and is more active than vancomycin against enterococci and some anaerobes.
Mechanism of action
Kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Parenteral):
- General infections: 6 mg/kg on day 1; then 3 mg/kg/day
- Severe infections: 6 mg/kg every 12 hours (first 3 doses); then 6 mg/kg/day
- CAPD-associated peritonitis: 400 mg loading; add 20 mg/liter to dialysis fluid
Pediatric Dose (Parenteral):
- Loading: 10 mg/kg every 12 hours (3 doses); then 6-10 mg/kg/day
- Neonates: 16 mg/kg on day 1; then 8 mg/kg/day
Administration
- Administer IV (bolus over 3-5 min or 30-minute infusion) or IM injection
- Use infusion method only in neonates
- Do not self-administer

Renal / hepatic impairment

Overdose effects
