Description
Live, attenuated virus stimulates active immunity to Yellow fever; conveys active immunity via stimulation of production of endogenously produced antibodies.
Indications
- Prophylaxis of Yellow fever infection
- Travelling to, passing through or living in an area where yellow fever occurs
- Travelling to any country that requires an International Certificate of Vaccination for entry
- Laboratory workers who may handle infectious materials

Pharmacology
Live, attenuated virus stimulates active immunity to Yellow fever; conveys active immunity via stimulation of production of endogenously produced antibodies.
Mechanism of action
Provides active immunity against yellow fever virus.
Dosage
Adult Dose (SC):
- Primary Vaccination: 0.5 ml, given as SC inj (preferably into the deltoid area) as a single dose, at least 10 days prior to travel
- Booster dose: Repeat dose every 10 yr for those at continued risk of exposure
Child Dose (>9 months) (SC):
- 0.5 ml, given as SC inj (preferably into the deltoid area for children >3 yr and thigh area for children <3 yr), at least 10 days prior to travel
- Booster dose: Repeat dose every 10 yr
Administration
- Given as an injection by a qualified and trained healthcare professional
- Usually injected just underneath the skin but can be given into a muscle
- Must not be injected into a blood vessel

Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Headache (5-10%)
- Chills (5-10%)
- Low-grade fever (5-10%)
- Myalgia (5-10%)
- Meningoencephalitis
- Seizures
- Rash

- Erythema
- Guillain-Barre syndrome
Precautions & warnings
- Caution when used in immunocompromised patients
- Increased risk of adverse effects when used in patients ≥65 yr
- Monitor for adverse events 10-30 days post-vaccination
- Pregnancy
- Lactation is a contraindication, particularly when infants are <9 months of age
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reaction to eggs, chicken proteins or to any component of this vaccine
- Serious hypersensitivity reactions after a previous dose of any yellow fever vaccine
- Immunosuppression
- History of thymus dysfunction
- Symptomatic HIV infection
- Age <6 months
- Current severe febrile illness
Drug interactions
- Immunosuppressants eg cytotoxic agents, systemic steroids
Food interactions
Food interactions are not significant.
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Should not receive Yellow Fever Vaccine during pregnancy unless this cannot be avoided.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Lactation constitutes a contraindication, particularly when infants are <9 months of age because of the risk of encephalitis.
Pediatric use
Contraindicated in infants less than 6 months old
Geriatric use
Increased risk of adverse effects when used in patients ≥65 yr
