Desonide 0.05% Topical is a mild to moderate potency topical corticosteroid used for the treatment of skin conditions with inflammation and itching.
Indications
- Mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (patients 3 months and older)
- Skin conditions with inflammation and itching
Pharmacology
Desonide gel contains Desonide which is a synthetic nonfluorinated corticosteroid for topical dermatologic use. Topical corticosteroids have anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and vasoconstrictive properties. Corticosteroids are thought to act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, called lipocortins, which control the biosynthesis of mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
Dosage
Adult: Apply a thin layer to affected areas 2-4 times daily. Discontinue when control is achieved. If no improvement within 4 weeks, discontinue use.
Side effects
Common local side effects: Burning, rash, and pruritus at the application site.
Rare (with higher potency steroids or occlusive dressings): Folliculitis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, secondary infection, skin atrophy, striae, and miliaria.
Use in pregnancy
Pregnancy Category C. Desonide may be unsafe during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Use only if clearly needed.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Precautions & warnings
For external use only; avoid contact with eyes; do not use on underarm or groin areas in children; discontinue if irritation develops; do not use occlusive dressings; do not use on infected skin; do not use for more than 4 consecutive weeks.
Overdose effects
Topically applied Desonide can be absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects.

Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light & moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
