Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid used for the long-term preventive treatment of asthma and COPD. It reduces inflammation in the lungs, widens the airways, and helps prevent asthma symptoms.
Indications
- Asthma - long-term preventive treatment
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Dosage
Adults (Inhaler): 1-2 inhalations twice daily. Some patients may require 4 inhalations twice daily.
Adults (Nebulizer solution): Severe asthma: 1-2 mg twice daily; Maintenance: 0.5-1 mg twice daily.
Children (2-12 years, Nebulizer): Initial: 0.5-1 mg twice daily; Maintenance: 0.25-0.5 mg twice daily.
Severe hepatic impairment: Avoid use. Moderate hepatic impairment: Reduce dose to 3 mg/day.
Note: Use the lowest effective dose. Continue regular use even if symptoms are controlled.
Side effects
Common side effects: Throat irritation, hoarseness, oral thrush (fungal infection in the mouth and throat), respiratory tract infection.
Long-term use: Adrenal gland suppression, osteoporosis, glaucoma or cataracts, growth delay in children.
Precautions & warnings
- Use the lowest effective dose to control asthma.
- Budesonide will not stop an ongoing asthma attack; use a rescue inhaler.
- Rinse your mouth after using the inhaler.
- Long-term use may require bone density and eye pressure tests.
- Risk of infection may increase.
- Inform your doctor if you have liver disease.
