Tenoxicam is an NSAID used for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, tendonitis, bursitis, and acute gout. It reduces inflammation and pain by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.
Indications
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Osteoarthritis
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Tendonitis, bursitis, periarthritis
- Acute gout
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Standard: 20 mg/day (at the same time each day)
- Acute gout: 40 mg/day for 2 days, then 20 mg/day for 5 days
- Chronic disorders: Not to exceed 20 mg/day; maintenance 10 mg/day
- Elderly: Use the lowest effective dose
Side effects
Common Side Effects (>1%):
- Gastric, epigastric, and abdominal discomfort, dyspepsia, heartburn, nausea
- Dizziness, headache
Rare (<1%):
- Constipation, diarrhea, stomatitis, vomiting, ulcers, GI bleeding
- Fatigue, sleep disturbances, dry mouth, vertigo
- Skin rash, pruritus, photosensitivity
- Elevated liver enzymes, renal function changes
Precautions & warnings
- Do not use in active or history of recurrent GI bleeding or peptic ulcer
- Do not use in severe heart failure, hemorrhagic diathesis, asthma
- Caution in renal or hepatic impairment
- Do not use in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy
