Indications
- Prevention of influenza in adults and children from six months and above, especially those with high risk of complications (children, senior citizens, susceptible individuals, those in influenza epidemic areas)
Dosage
Adult Dose (Intramuscular):
- 0.5 ml (one dose every year)
Child Dose (Intramuscular):
- Children over 3 years: 0.5 ml (one dose every year)
- Children 6-36 months: 0.25 ml (one dose every year)
- Children <9 years not previously vaccinated: 2nd dose after at least 4 weeks
Side effects
Local Reactions:
- Erythema (redness)
- Swelling
- Pain
- Ecchymosis
- Induration
Systemic Reactions:
- Fever
- Malaise
- Shivering
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Sweating
- Joint and muscular pain
Rare: Neuralgia, paresthesia, convulsions, transient thrombocytopenia, allergic reactions (shock), vasculitis (very rare)
Precautions & warnings
Precautions:
- Vaccine contains traces of formaldehyde, octoxinol 9 (Triton X-100) and neomycin; caution in hypersensitivity to these substances
- History of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) related to influenza vaccination may increase risk of recurrence
- Immunisation should not be performed during febrile or acute illness
- Use in pregnancy & lactation: Safety not established; as inactivated vaccine, does not share theoretical risks of live vaccines
