Trypan Blue 0.06% is used before eye examinations. It has tissue staining properties. Once injected, it stains the damaged cells of the eye, helping the doctor identify problems with the cornea and diagnose certain eye diseases.
Indications
- Eye examination
- Anterior capsule staining in ophthalmic surgery
Dosage
Adult Dose (Ophthalmic):
- Inject an air bubble into the anterior chamber using a 26 gauge needle
- Inject Trypan Blue into the anterior lens capsule using a tuberculin syringe
- Sufficient staining is achieved as soon as the dye contacts the capsule
- If some area is left unstained, inject one more drop until it gets stained
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Eye discoloration
- Discoloration of high water content hydrogen intraocular lenses
- Inadvertent staining of the posterior lens capsule and vitreous face (generally self-limited, lasting up to one week)
Precautions & warnings
- Unknown if alters ability to drive; caution advised
- After injection, all excess Trypan Blue should be immediately removed by thorough irrigation of the anterior chamber
- Caution to avoid eye damage
