Prof. Dr. Syed Maruf Ali

After completing his MBBS degree from Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College (SOMC) in the year 1980, Prof. Dr. Syed Maruf Ali obtained his FCPS degree from Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons in the year 1988 in Ophthalmology. He also obtained higher training in Ophthalmology from Moorfield Eye Hospital, London. He had a very bright phase of professional life. Right from the beginning of his career, he served successfully in different positions in different medical colleges in Bangladesh. RS (Residential Surgeon) in SOMC, Assistant Professor in the then IPGMR, Dhaka; Associate professor in DMC, SMC, RMC, MMC are some of the highlights.

Prof. Maruf is a very famous phaco surgeon, who is one of the pioneers of Phaco surgery in Bangladesh. He first introduced wetlab training in phaco Surgery in NIO, under whom a lot of fresh ophthalmologists got training in phaco surgery. He is a successful endoscopic laser DCR surgeon and also skilled in Glaucoma and medical retina.

He is the founder line director of National Eye Care in Bangladesh. He is also one of the Directors of Bangladesh Eye Hospital, Malibagh, Dhaka. He is the chairman of The Sylhet Eye Hospital and Laser Centre, which aims to provide the people of the holy city with the best eye care.

He was director cum professor in National Institute of Ophthalmology from 2003 to 2009. Later he was appointed as the professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology in Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, from where he retired from government service in 2015.

He is a visiting professor of the dept. of ophthalmology in North East Medical College, Sylhet. He is also involved as a visiting surgeon in Jalalabad Blind Welfare Hospital and Sylhet Diabetic Hospital.

Dr. Maruf is a life member of OSB (Ophthalmology Society of Bangladesh), BGS(Bangladesh Glaucoma Society), BUS( Bangladesh Uveal Society) , Bangladesh Cataract and Refractive Surgery Society, Jalalabad Blind Welfare Society etc.
