At a glance
Gramicidin + Neomycin + Polymyxin B is an ophthalmic solution used for the topical treatment of superficial infections of the external eye and its adnexa caused by susceptible bacteria.
Description
Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic which inhibits protein synthesis by binding with ribosomal RNA and causing misreading of the bacterial genetic code. Polymyxin B increases the permeability of the bacterial cell membrane by interacting with the phospholipid components of the membrane. Gramicidin increases the permeability of the bacterial cell membrane to inorganic cations by forming a network of channels through the normal lipid bilayer of the membrane.
Indications
- Conjunctivitis
- Keratitis
- Keratoconjunctivitis
- Blepharitis
- Blepharoconjunctivitis
Therapeutic class
Ophthalmic antibacterial drugs
Pharmacological class
Aminoglycoside + Polymyxin + Gramicidin
Pharmacology
Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic which inhibits protein synthesis by binding with ribosomal RNA and causing misreading of the bacterial genetic code. Polymyxin B increases the permeability of the bacterial cell membrane by interacting with the phospholipid components of the membrane. Gramicidin increases the permeability of the bacterial cell membrane to inorganic cations by forming a network of channels through the normal lipid bilayer of the membrane.
Mechanism of action
Neomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis; Polymyxin B and Gramicidin increase bacterial cell membrane permeability to kill bacteria.
Dosage
Adult: Instill 1-2 drops into the affected eye every 4 hours for 7-10 days. In severe infections, may increase to 2 drops every hour.
Administration
For ophthalmic use only. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Place the medicine inside the lower eyelid.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose.
Side effects
Common: Allergic reactions (itching, swelling, conjunctival erythema).
Rare: Anaphylaxis, local irritation.
Precautions & warnings
Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms including fungi. If superinfection occurs, appropriate measures should be initiated. Bacterial resistance may develop. If purulent discharge, inflammation or pain becomes aggravated, discontinue use and consult a physician.
