Description
Naftopidil is a selective α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist with higher antagonistic effect on α1D receptor. It relieves smooth muscle tension in urethra and prostate gland so urine is passed more easily and suppresses the overactivity of detrusor muscle.
Indications
- Benign prostatic obstruction
- Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

Pharmacology
Naftopidil is a selective α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist with higher antagonistic effect on α1D receptor. It relieves smooth muscle tension in urethra and prostate gland and suppresses detrusor muscle overactivity, making urination easier.
Mechanism of action
Relaxes smooth muscle in urethra and prostate to improve urine flow.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Initial: 25 mg once daily (after meal)
- If insufficient: Gradually increase to 50-75 mg once daily at 1-2 week intervals
- Maximum daily dose: 75 mg
Administration
- Take after meals
- Swallow tablet whole; do not crush or chew
- Take at the same time each day
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Stomach discomfort
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in patients with salt imbalance, orthostatic hypotension and diabetes
- Risk of temporary loss of consciousness due to sudden blood pressure decrease
- Caution while driving (may cause dizziness)
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
Drug interactions
- Concomitant use with pain killers, blood thinners, rheumatoid arthritis medicines, anti-anxiety drugs, antifungals may cause side effects
Food interactions
Take with food for better absorption.
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: No controlled studies in pregnant women; use only if clearly needed.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: No data on presence in human milk; use with caution.
Pediatric use
Safety and efficacy not established in patients below 18 years.
Geriatric use
Elderly may require dose adjustment.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Renal Impairment: No dose adjustment required in kidney disease.
Hepatic Impairment: Dose adjustment may be required in severe hepatic impairment.
Overdose effects
Overdose: Symptomatic and supportive measures should be instituted.
