Oxytetracycline + Polymixin B Sulphate is a combination topical antibiotic effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is used for superficial eye and skin infections.
Description
Oxytetracycline binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis. Polymyxin B causes leakage of bacterial membrane to produce bactericidal effect, especially effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Polymyxin B also possesses some antifungal activity.
Indications
- Superficial ocular infections due to oxytetracycline and polymyxin-sensitive organisms (conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal ulcer, blepharitis)
- Superficial skin infections

Pharmacology
Oxytetracycline binds to 30S ribosomal subunit to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis. Polymyxin B interacts with phospholipid components of bacterial membrane to produce bactericidal effect, especially against gram-negative bacteria and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Mechanism of action
Treats infections by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and destroying cell membranes.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Topical/Eye):
- Eye ointment: Apply 2-4 times daily
- Skin ointment: Apply on sterile gauze 2-3 times daily
Pediatric Dose: Same as adult
Administration
- For external use only
- Apply a thin layer to affected area
- May be covered with sterile bandage or gauze
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Side Effects:
- No common side effects at small doses
- Local skin irritation
- Severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, facial swelling)
Precautions & warnings
- Avoid prolonged use (overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms)
- Severe anaphylactic reactions may occur
- Serious reactions reported in some animals with ophthalmic preparations
