Doripenem is a carbapenem antibiotic used to treat severe infections of the skin, lungs, stomach, urinary tract, blood and brain (e.g. meningitis). It works by killing bacteria.
Indications
- Severe bacterial infections
Dosage
Adult Dose:
- Complicated intra-abdominal infections: 500 mg IV every 8 hours for 5-14 days
- Complicated UTI and pyelonephritis: 500 mg IV every 8 hours for 10 days
Renal Dose: CrCl 30-50: 250 mg every 8 hours; CrCl 11-29: 250 mg every 12 hours.

Common Side Effects:
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness)
Precautions & warnings
- Usually given in hospital for serious infections.
- Inform doctor if allergic to penicillin or taking seizure medication.
- Inform doctor if diarrhea, severe abdominal pain or blood in stools.
- Liver and kidney function may be monitored.
