Metoprolol Tartrate is a beta-blocker used to treat hypertension angina arrhythmia and prevent migraine.

Pharmacology

Metoprolol is a selective beta1-blocker. It reduces the agonistic effect of catecholamines on the heart resulting in decreased heart rate cardiac output and blood pressure. It interferes less with insulin release and carbohydrate metabolism than non-selective beta-blockers.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Oral):

  • Hypertension: Initial: 100 mg/day; may increase to 400 mg/day; Maintenance: 100-200 mg/day
  • Angina: 50-100 mg 2-3 times daily
  • Arrhythmias: 50 mg 2-3 times daily; may increase to 300 mg/day
  • Hyperthyroidism: 25-50 mg 4 times daily
  • Migraine Prophylaxis: 100-200 mg/day
  • Heart Failure: Initial: 12.5-25 mg/day; Target: 200 mg/day

Child Dose: 1-2 mg/kg/day; Max: 6 mg/kg or 200 mg/day

Side effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Slow heart rate
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Fatigue and tiredness
  • Stomach pain and nausea
  • Breathlessness
Use in pregnancy

Use in Pregnancy (Category C): Possibly unsafe. Your doctor will weigh benefits and risks.

Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.

Precautions & warnings
  • Caution while driving
  • Rise slowly from sitting or lying position
  • Monitor glucose if diabetic
  • Do not stop abruptly
  • Caution in liver problems
Overdose effects

Overdose may cause severe hypotension sinus bradycardia AV block heart failure cardiogenic shock bronchospasm coma. Symptomatic treatment.

Store in a cool and dry place protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
