Amino Acids 5% & 10% is a parenteral nutrition solution used to treat protein deficiencies. It maintains nitrogen balance and replenishes protein reserves in extensive burns or protein-calorie malnutrition.
Indications
Protein deficiency (protein-calorie malnutrition), extensive burns, maintaining nitrogen balance, post-surgical nutritional support, as part of parenteral nutrition.
Pharmacology
Amino acids are the basic building blocks of proteins. They are essential for tissue growth, repair and maintenance. Catabolism of amino acids initiates in muscle and yields NADH and FADH2 which can be utilized for ATP generation. It helps maintain positive nitrogen balance and replenishes protein reserves.
Dosage
Adults: Dosage is individualized based on patient condition and requirements. Usually 500-1000 mL of 5% or 10% amino acid solution daily.
Children: Dosage is individualized based on body weight and condition.
Side effects
Common side effects: Injection site inflammation (redness, swelling, pain), flushing, increased sweating, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting.
Serious (rare): Folic acid deficiency, metabolic disorders, liver damage, electrolyte imbalance, allergic reactions.
Use in pregnancy
Pregnancy Category: C. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the fetus; human studies are limited. Use only if clearly needed with medical advice.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.

Overdose effects
Overdose symptoms: electrolyte imbalance, metabolic alkalosis, liver problems. Treatment: symptomatic and supportive measures.
Storage conditions
Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Below 25°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
