Monosulfiram is an ectoparasiticide used for the treatment and prevention of scabies. It is active against the burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei.
Indications
- Treatment of scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei)
- Prophylaxis of scabies
Dosage
Adult Dose (Topical):
- 25% solution: Dilute with 2-3 parts water before application
- Apply diluted solution to entire body (except face and scalp)
- Allow 10 minutes to dry, then dress
- In difficult cases, repeat for 2-3 days
Prophylaxis: Use daily for as long as infection risk remains
Side effects
Side Effects:
- Erythematous rash (rare)
- Idiosyncratic reactions
Precautions & warnings
- Do not apply near naked flame (solution is flammable)
- Due to chemical relationship with disulfiram, avoid alcohol before and for at least 48 hours after application
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes
