Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl Peroxide is an antibacterial medicine used for the topical treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. It can be used alone or with other acne treatments including retinoic acid products, antibiotics and sulfur/salicylic acid containing preparations.

The peroxide bond of benzoyl peroxide is cleaved to form 2 benzoyloxy radicals. These radicals interact nonspecifically with bacterial proteins, interfering with their function and survival of the bacteria. Over time, free radical interactions with bacterial proteins lead to decreased keratin and sebum around follicles. Benzoyl peroxide can also increase the turnover rate of epithelial cells, leading to skin peeling and breaking down comedones.

Common side effects include itching, skin irritation, dryness, burning sensation, and allergic contact dermatitis.

• Mild to moderate acne vulgaris

Benzoyl peroxide has a mild keratolytic effect and antimicrobial activity which is attributed to its oxidative property. It is active against S. epidermidis and P. acnes.

Benzoyl Peroxide releases oxygen to kill acne-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes). It also removes dead skin cells (keratolytic effect) and breaks down comedones.

Adults: Apply a thin layer to affected areas 1-2 times daily.

Children (under 12 years): Safety and efficacy have not been established.

Start with once daily during the first week, then increase to twice daily as tolerated.

For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area and apply a thin layer of gel. Wash hands after application. Avoid contact with eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. Shake well before use.

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.

• Avoid excessive sun exposure (skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight)
• Avoid contact with hair and fabrics (may bleach)
• Do not apply to broken or damaged skin
• Avoid contact with eyes, lips, and mucous membranes
• If severe irritation or allergy occurs, discontinue use and consult your doctor
• Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors
• Excessive application does not produce faster or better results but may increase irritation

• Hypersensitivity to benzoyl peroxide

• Desquamative, irritant, and drying products: Should not be used concurrently with Benzoyl Peroxide gel
• PABA sunscreens: May transiently discolor fabric

No food-related restrictions (topical application).

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Insufficient data on safety during pregnancy (Category C). Animal reproductive studies have not been conducted. Use only if clearly needed.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Benzoyl Peroxide is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. However, caution is advised.

Safety and efficacy in children under 12 years have not been established.

No dose adjustment needed for elderly patients, but caution is advised.

Systemic absorption with topical application is minimal, so no dosage adjustment is needed for renal or hepatic impairment.

Excessive application may cause severe irritation. Discontinue use and institute appropriate symptomatic therapy.

Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
