At a glance
Bromelain + Trypsin is a combination enzyme preparation used in the treatment of inflammatory pains, soft tissue inflammation, and edema associated with trauma and surgery. It works by modulating multiple inflammatory signaling pathways to reduce swelling and pain.
Description
Bromelain + Trypsin is a systemic enzyme therapy used to reduce inflammation and edema. Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme derived from pineapple plant extract, and trypsin is an enzyme derived from the pancreas. This combination interferes with multiple signaling pathways in the inflammatory process, reducing swelling and pain.
Clinical studies have shown that the bromelain + trypsin combination is effective in reducing postoperative inflammatory edema and wound pain. It is used in various inflammatory conditions such as gynecological conditions, breast engorgement, fractures, sprains, injuries, hemorrhoids, and anal prolapse.
Indications
- Inflammatory pains
- Soft tissue inflammation
- Edema associated with trauma and surgery
- Gynaecological conditions
- Breast engorgement
- Fractures
- Sprains
- Injuries
- Hemorrhoids
- Anal prolapse

Proteolytic Enzyme Combination
Pharmacology
Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme derived from pineapple (Ananas comosus) with anti-inflammatory, anti-edema, and fibrinolytic properties. Trypsin is a serine protease derived from the pancreas that modulates inflammatory signaling pathways. This combination inhibits major inflammatory transcription factors such as NF-κB, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) and COX-2 levels. It also exhibits antioxidant effects that reduce inflammation-related tissue stress.
Mechanism of action
Bromelain and trypsin target multiple inflammatory signaling pathways. They inactivate NF-κB, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine production, break down fibrin deposits to improve microcirculation, and reduce edema. In animal models of carrageenan-induced edema, this combination showed dose-dependent inhibition of edema formation and demonstrated synergistic effects compared to individual enzymes.
Dosage
Initial dose: 2 tablets 3 times daily before meals.
Maintenance dose: 1 tablet 3 times daily before meals.
Note: In clinical studies, postoperative patients received 2 tablets 4 times daily for up to 10 days. Dosage may vary based on patient condition and physician's advice.
Administration
Take before meals with adequate water. Swallow tablets whole; do not chew or crush. Follow the dose and duration as advised by your physician.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose.
Side effects
- Bromelain may cause diarrhea and stomach and intestinal discomfort.
- Gastrointestinal issues such as bloating, nausea may occur (rare).
Precautions & warnings
- Patients allergic to pineapple, latex, wheat, celery, carrot, fennel, cypress pollen, or grass pollen may have an allergic reaction to bromelain.
- Bromelain may increase the risk of bleeding during and after surgery; inform your doctor before surgery.
- Caution if taking blood thinners (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel).
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to bromelain or trypsin
Drug interactions
- Anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel): Bromelain may increase bleeding risk; caution with co-administration.
- Antibiotics: Bromelain may increase absorption of some antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines, amoxicillin).
Food interactions
Better absorption when taken before meals; no other specific food restrictions.
