Description

Calcium Lactate is mainly used in the treatment of calcium deficiency, which most frequently occurs in growing children, lactating and pregnant mothers. It is especially useful to remove symptoms associated with hypocalcemia such as paresthesia, carpopedal spasm, muscle cramps, increased muscle excitability leading to tetany, convulsion, mental changes, dermatitis, and ECG changes.

This preparation has three main actions: It supplements dietary calcium, neutralizes gastric acid in peptic ulcer disease, and sequesters phosphorus in the intestine to reduce total body phosphate accumulation in chronic renal failure.

Pharmacology

Calcium Lactate supplements dietary calcium, neutralizes gastric acid in peptic ulcer disease, and sequesters phosphorus in the intestine to reduce phosphate accumulation. Calcium is essential for bone mineralization, nerve impulse conduction, and muscle contraction.

Mechanism of action

Calcium Lactate provides essential calcium to the body, supporting bone mineralization, nerve impulse conduction, muscle contraction, and normal cardiac function. It also neutralizes gastric acid and binds phosphate in the intestine.

Dosage

Adults and elderly: 1-2 tablets (300-600 mg) daily.

Children over 3 years: 1 tablet (300 mg) daily.

Pregnant women: 3-4 tablets (900-1200 mg) daily. Duration: During third trimester and lactation.

Adults (19-50 years): 1000 mg elemental Ca/day; >50 years: 1200 mg elemental Ca/day.

Renal impairment: Frequent monitoring of serum calcium and phosphorus is recommended.

Administration

Take with food (for better absorption). Swallow tablets whole; do not chew or crush. Follow the dose and duration as advised by your physician.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose.

Side effects

Common side effects: GI discomfort (nausea, vomiting, constipation), bradycardia, arrhythmias, dry mouth, increased thirst or increased urination, mental confusion, milk-alkali syndrome.

Oral administration may cause gastrointestinal irritation and constipation (rare).

Precautions & warnings
  • Caution in sarcoidosis and history of nephrolithiasis.
  • Avoid IV administration of calcium in patients on cardiac glycosides.
  • Increased risk of hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria in hypoparathyroid patients receiving high doses of vitamin D.
  • Caution in patients with history of kidney stones.
  • Patients should be advised to administer vitamin D concurrently to optimize calcium absorption.
  • Use with caution in impaired renal function, cardiac disease, or sarcoidosis.
  • Caution during pregnancy and lactation.
Contraindications
  • Conditions associated with hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria
  • Hypercalcemia associated with sarcoidosis
  • Bone metastasis of neoplastic process
Drug interactions
  • Calcium-channel blockers: May reduce efficacy.
  • Cardiac glycosides (digitalis): Concurrent IV administration of calcium salts may lead to serious adverse events.
  • Thiazide diuretics: Increased risk of hypercalcemia.
  • Tetracyclines, alendronate, atenolol, iron, quinolone antibiotics, sodium fluoride, zinc: Calcium may reduce their absorption.
Food interactions

Take with food for better absorption; foods containing oxalic acid and phytic acid may reduce calcium absorption.

Use in pregnancy

Adequate information on use during pregnancy is not available; calcium requirements increase during pregnancy (third trimester and lactation: 900-1200 mg/day). Consult your doctor.

Use in lactation

Safe during breastfeeding (if prescribed); calcium requirements increase during lactation.

Pediatric use
Children over 3 years: 1 tablet (300 mg) daily. Consult your doctor for children under 3 years.
Geriatric use

Renal / hepatic impairment

Overdose effects

Overdose may cause hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, milk-alkali syndrome. Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, constipation, confusion, coma. Consult your doctor immediately if overdose is suspected.
