Description
Dutasteride is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It shrinks the size of the enlarged prostate gland to relieve symptoms like pain and difficulty in passing urine. Dutasteride is to be taken by mouth with or without food. The dose and duration of the medicine should be taken as per prescription. An overdose of it may cause harm to your health. It is better to take the medicine at the same time each day and it must be swallowed as a whole. It may take some time for the medicine to act upon the symptoms, so it is important to take the medicine regularly. The course of the treatment should be completed for better efficacy of the medicine. This medicine is usually well tolerated. However, it may cause some mild sexual side effects such as low sexual drive, trouble getting and maintaining an erection (impotence), decrease sperm count, etc. Some people may also experience allergic reactions such as itching, rashes, and swelling of the lips or face. If you experience any of these side effects, consult your doctor without delay. Before starting the treatment, it is important to tell your doctor if you are taking any medication for any health condition. Remember not to donate blood for six months after taking the last dose of this medicine. Dutasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It blocks an enzyme which is necessary to change testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow. As a result, it helps to shrink the prostate and relieve the symptoms like difficulty in passing urine.
Indications
• Benign prostatic hyperplasia
Mechanism of action
Dutasteride has antiandrogenic properties. It inhibits 5alpha-reductase, thus preventing the conversion of testosterone to 5?-dihydrotestosterone which is the main androgen involved in causing prostate enlargement.
Dosage
Adult Dose: Oral Benign prostatic hyperplasia Adult: 500 mcg once daily for at least 6 mth. Hepatic impairment: Severe: Contraindicated. Renal Dose: Renal impairment: Dose adjustment not necessary
Administration
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Do not chew, crush or break it. Dutasteride may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of Dutasteride, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Precautions & warnings
[SAFE] Dutasteride does not usually affect your ability to drive. Your doctor has prescribed Dutasteride to shrink the enlarged prostate and reduce the risk of urinary retention. It may take 3 to 6 months to see the full beneficial effect of Dutasteride. Hence, continue taking the medicine as advised by your doctor. Dutasteride is usually well tolerated. However, it may produce some mild sexual side effects such as low sexual drive. Do not donate blood for 6 months after taking the last dose of Dutasteride.
Contraindications
Severe liver impairment; pregnant women, children, adolescent.
Drug interactions
Plasma concentrations may be increased when used concomitantly w/ moderate or potent CYP3A4 inhibitors.
Food interactions

Use in pregnancy

I was having high psa > 8.00. It was Benign Prostate Hyperlasia. Repeated infection of prostate over many years. TURP of prostate done in Nov'2015. Prostate was 30 mg approx then. Still psa remained at 8.27 after TURP. No malignancy in biopsy. In Sept'2016 12 core biopsy of prostate done as psa remained high; biopsy reported no malignancy. On veltride-0.5 since Sept16 . Psa was 5,47 in between and now again it is 6.28. Doctor has given now dutas-0.5mg replacing veltride. He told that after 3 to 4 months if psa remains high beyond 7.00 then MP-MRI to be done. No other problem of infection or pain or swelling. Am I on the right track ? Why PSA remains so high high even 16 months after TURP ? I am not having any urge for sex. Doctor has given tadalagress20 mg ( alternate days) due to loss of libido, which I have not yet taken. Is it safe to take tadalgress alongwith dutas-0.5 mg ? First of all PSA of 8 is not very high.
