Description
Sertaconazole is an imidazole antifungal agent that inhibits fungal cytochrome P450-mediated 14α-lanosterol demethylase enzyme. Ergosterol is a key component of fungal cell membranes; its deficiency leads to fungal cell injury and death.
Indications
- Interdigital tinea pedis (athlete's foot) caused by Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum
- Other topical fungal infections (≥12 years, immunocompetent)

Pharmacology
Sertaconazole inhibits fungal cytochrome P450-mediated 14α-lanosterol demethylase, preventing ergosterol synthesis. Ergosterol is essential for fungal cell membrane integrity; its deficiency increases membrane permeability and causes fungal cell death.
Mechanism of action
Destroys fungal cell membranes by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Topical):
- Tinea pedis: Apply 2% cream twice daily to affected area and surrounding healthy skin for up to 4 weeks
Administration
- For external use only
- Apply sufficient amount to cover affected area and 1 inch of surrounding healthy skin
- Avoid contact with eyes, nose, or mouth
- Shake well before use
Missed dose
If you miss an application, apply at the next scheduled time.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Contact dermatitis
- Dry skin
- Burning skin
- Application site tenderness
- Erythema, pruritus, vesiculation, desquamation, hyperpigmentation
Precautions & warnings
- Safety and efficacy not established in children <12 years
- Discontinue treatment if irritation develops
- Cross-reactivity may occur with azole antifungals
- Inform doctor if infection does not clear within 4 weeks
Contraindications
- Known or suspected hypersensitivity to sertaconazole nitrate or other imidazoles
