Description
Zinc oxide has astringent, soothing and protective properties and is used in topical preparations for eczema, slight excoriations, wounds and haemorrhoids. It also reflects ultraviolet radiation and can be used as a physical sunscreen.

Pharmacology
Zinc oxide has astringent, soothing and protective properties and is used in topical preparations for eczema, slight excoriations, wounds and haemorrhoids. It also reflects ultraviolet radiation and can be used as a physical sunscreen.
Mechanism of action
Protects, soothes, and moisturizes the skin.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Topical):
- Haemorrhoids, vulvo-vaginitis & Eczema: Use 3 times daily or as required in a thin layer to protect the skin
Child Dose (Topical):
- Nappy rash: Apply thin layer topically every 8 hourly
Administration
- Change wet and soiled diapers
- Promptly clean the diaper area, allow to dry and apply ointment liberally
- Apply with each diaper change
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember; if almost time for next dose, skip it; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Usually well tolerated
- Extremely low frequency of hypersensitivity reaction
Precautions & warnings
- For external use only
- Avoid contact with the eyes
- Stop use and ask a doctor if condition worsens or does not improve within 7 days
- Keep out of the reach of children
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation
Drug interactions
- Zinc oxide reduce therapeutic efficacy of hydroxyquinoline
