Indications
Prevents and treats iron-deficiency anaemia, especially as a syrup for children and pregnant women.

Mechanism of action
Replenishes body iron — essential for haemoglobin production and oxygen transport.
Dosage
As prescribed by elemental iron content; syrup dosed by child's age/weight, adults a fixed daily dose.
Administration
Best absorbed on an empty stomach; take with food if it upsets the stomach. Vitamin C (lemon/orange) boosts absorption.
Missed dose
Take when remembered; skip if the next dose is near.
Side effects
Stomach upset, nausea, constipation or diarrhoea, black stools (normal), teeth staining with syrup (less if taken via a straw).
Precautions & warnings
Keep out of children's reach — iron overdose is dangerous in children.
Contraindications
Iron overload (haemochromatosis), anaemia from repeated transfusions.
Drug interactions
Antacids, tetracyclines/fluoroquinolones, calcium and tea/coffee reduce absorption; separate doses.
Food interactions
Tea, milk and calcium reduce absorption; vitamin C increases it.
Use in pregnancy
Needed and generally safe in pregnancy (Category A).

Overdose effects
