At a glance
Fluorometholone 0.1% Eye prep is a steroid used for the treatment of redness and swelling in the eyes that may be due to infection or allergy.
Indications
- Redness and swelling in the eye: Used for acute and chronic allergic non-infectious conjunctivitis and keratitis with severe swelling and intravascular injection.
- Non-infectious inflammation of anterior segment: Used for anterior uveitis, episcleritis and scleritis.
- Post-operative conditions: Used for irritative conditions after strabotomy, cataract and glaucoma surgery.
Pharmacology
Fluorometholone is thought to act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins which control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor arachidonic acid. It suppresses the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and reversal of increased capillary permeability thus decreasing inflammation.
