Poly (0-2-hydroxyethyl) starch 60g + Sodium Chloride is a colloidal solution volume expander used for prophylaxis of hypovolemia and shock, surgery (hemorrhagic shock), injuries (traumatic shock), burns, and therapeutic dilution of blood.

Indications
  • Prophylaxis of hypovolemia and shock
  • Surgery (hemorrhagic shock)
  • Injuries (traumatic shock)
  • Burns
  • Therapeutic dilution of blood
Dosage

Adult Dose (IV):

  • Up to 50 mL/kg body weight per day (equivalent to 3 g hydroxyethyl starch and 7.7 mEq sodium/kg)
  • Up to 3500 mL for a 70 kg patient

Pediatric Dose (IV):

  • Newborns & <2 years: Mean dose 16 mL/kg
  • 2-12 years: Mean dose 36 mL/kg
  • Give initial 10-20 mL by slow IV infusion and monitor for anaphylactoid reaction
Side effects

Side Effects (<10%):

  • Immune system disorders (rare): Anaphylactoid reactions (mild influenza-like symptoms, bradycardia, tachycardia, bronchospasm, non-cardiac pulmonary edema)
  • Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders (common, dose-dependent): Prolonged administration of high doses may cause pruritus (itching)
Precautions & warnings
  • Anaphylactoid reactions may occur; if hypersensitivity occurs, discontinue immediately
  • Regularly assess fluid status and infusion rate (especially in cardiac insufficiency or severe kidney dysfunction)
  • Caution in severe liver disease or severe bleeding disorders
  • Contraindicated in renal failure with oliguria or anuria
