Spiramycine is a macrolide antibiotic used for the treatment of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women. It helps lower the risk of transmission of toxoplasma infection from the mother to the unborn child.
Indications
- Toxoplasmosis during pregnancy
- Protozoal infections
- Cryptosporidiosis
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Toxoplasmosis/Protozoal infections: 6-9 million units/day in 2-3 divided doses
- Severe infections: Up to 15 million units/day
Pediatric/Neonatal Dose (Oral):
- Chemoprophylaxis of congenital toxoplasmosis: 50 mg/kg twice daily

- Nausea, vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Allergy
Precautions & warnings
- Regular monitoring of liver function tests (LFT) may be required
- Safe during pregnancy; however, will not affect severity if unborn child is already infected
