Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide is an antitussive medicine used for the treatment of dry cough.
Indications
- Chronic dry cough
- Unproductive cough
- Acute dry cough interfering with normal function or sleep
Dosage
Adults & Children (>12 years): 10-20 mg (1-2 tsp) every 4 hours OR 30 mg (3 tsp) every 6-8 hours; max 120 mg (12 tsp) in 24 hours.
Children (6-12 years): 5-10 mg (½-1 tsp) every 4 hours OR 15 mg (1½ tsp) every 6-8 hours; max 60 mg (6 tsp) in 24 hours.
Children (2-6 years): 2.5-5 mg (¼-½ tsp) every 4 hours OR 7.5 mg (¾ tsp) every 6-8 hours; max 30 mg (3 tsp) in 24 hours.
Children under 2 years: Use only as directed by the physician.
Side effects
Common: Sleepiness, dizziness, excitement, confusion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash.
Serious: Convulsion, respiratory depression (with overdose).
Precautions & warnings
May affect driving ability (sleepiness, dizziness). Do not use for chronic cough or cough with excessive secretions. Consult doctor if cough lasts >7 days, recurs, or is accompanied by fever, rash, or headache. Avoid in liver disease.
