75% of calcium from algae source is absorbed in the intestine. In a USP dissolution test (simulating stomach condition), 97% of calcium from algae source goes into solution. Each chewable tablet contains Calcium Carbonate (Algae source) 250 mg.

Calcium (Algae Source) is indicated for osteogenesis, osteomalacia, hypoparathyroidism, rickets, brain development, inadequate intake of calcium in childhood diet, pregnancy and lactation, poor absorption during old age, pancreatitis, and as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure.

Algae source calcium is absorbed in the intestine, passes into the bloodstream, and is deposited into bone. Its fibrous chemical structure provides better solubility and absorption compared to other calcium sources.

Dosage

Adults: 1-2 chewable tablets once or twice daily, or as directed by the physician.

Note: Dosage is determined by the physician based on the patient's clinical condition.

Administration

Chew the tablets; do not swallow whole. May be taken with or without food. Follow the dose and duration as advised by your physician.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose.

Side effects
  • Rare: Flatulence, diarrhea
  • Prolonged use (rare): Hypercalcemia
Precautions & warnings
  • In mild hypercalciuria, reduce the dose to maintain normal serum calcium concentration.
  • Patients with kidney stone (or history of it) should be advised to increase fluid intake.
  • Avoid use in increased activity of parathyroid gland, hypercalcemia, kidney stone, and extreme loss of body water.

Drug interactions
  • Major interaction: IV Ceftriaxone + Calcium can cause life-threatening damage to the lungs and kidneys. Calcium should not be given intravenously within 48 hours of IV ceftriaxone.
  • Minor interaction: Calcium reduces absorption of tetracycline and fluoride preparations (allow at least 3 hours gap). Thiazide diuretics reduce renal excretion of calcium. Certain foods (spinach, cereals, milk, and derivatives) may reduce intestinal calcium uptake.
Food interactions

Spinach, cereals, milk, and dairy products may reduce calcium absorption; avoid taking calcium supplements with these foods.

Use in pregnancy

Calcium requirements increase during pregnancy; can be used as a supplement during pregnancy and lactation. Consult your doctor.

Use in lactation

Calcium requirements increase during lactation; use under medical supervision.

Pediatric use

Use in children under medical supervision (for inadequate calcium intake in childhood diet).

Geriatric use

Can be used as a supplement for poor absorption during old age; consult your doctor.

Renal / hepatic impairment
Renal impairment: Used as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure; caution in history of kidney stones.

Overdose effects

Overdose may cause hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria. Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, constipation, confusion. Consult your doctor immediately if overdose is suspected.
