Description

Povidone-iodine is an iodophore with powerful broad-spectrum germicidal activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and spores. It oxidizes cell constituents and iodinates proteins, inactivating them. The 7.5% formulation is used as a surgical scrub.

Pharmacology

Povidone-iodine slowly releases elemental iodine, providing prolonged germicidal activity. The 7.5% scrub formulation is effective for preoperative hand and skin cleansing.

Mechanism of action

Prevents infection by killing harmful microorganisms.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Topical):

  • Preoperative hand washing: Wet hands, pour 5 mL solution on palm, rub for 2 minutes to develop suds, rinse thoroughly under running water
  • Pre- and post-operative skin cleansing: After skin is shaved and wet, apply scrub, rub for minimum 2 minutes, rinse with sterile gauze saturated with water
Administration
  • Check the label before use
  • Wet hands and apply 5 mL solution
  • Rub for 2 minutes to develop suds
  • Rinse thoroughly under running water
Missed dose

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next application; do not double the dose.
