Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic used for schizophrenia and mania in bipolar disorder. It blocks dopamine and serotonin receptors to improve mood, thoughts and behavior.
Indications
- Schizophrenia and related psychoses (positive and negative symptoms)
- Acute manic or mixed episodes in bipolar disorder
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Schizophrenia: 5-10 mg/day (initial); increase by 5 mg/day weekly; maintenance: 10-20 mg/day; max 20 mg/day
- Mania (monotherapy): 10-15 mg/day (initial); 5-20 mg/day (maintenance)
- Mania (with lithium/valproate): 10 mg/day (initial); 5-20 mg/day (maintenance)
- Hepatic/Renal impairment: 5 mg/day (initial)
Pediatric Dose (13-17 years): 2.5-5 mg/day (initial); target 10 mg/day; range 2.5-20 mg/day

Precautions & warnings
- Do not stop suddenly (may worsen symptoms)
