Oxazepam is a benzodiazepine used for anxiety disorders and alcohol withdrawal symptoms. It enhances GABA's inhibitory effect to suppress abnormal and excessive activity of nerve cells in the brain.
Indications
- Anxiety disorders (especially tension, irritability and agitation in elderly)
- Acute alcohol withdrawal symptoms
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Mild-moderate anxiety: 10-15 mg 3-4 times daily
- Severe anxiety/agitation: 15-30 mg 3-4 times daily
- Alcohol withdrawal: 15-30 mg 3-4 times daily
- Insomnia (anxiety-related): 15-25 mg 1 hour before bedtime
Elderly Dose: 10 mg 3 times daily (initial); increase to 10-20 mg 3-4 times daily if needed
Pediatric Dose (>12 years): 10-15 mg 3-4 times daily (mild-moderate); 15-30 mg 3-4 times daily (severe)

Precautions & warnings
- High addiction/habit-forming potential
- Do not stop suddenly (withdrawal symptoms may occur)
- Should not be used for more than 4 weeks
- Caution while driving
- Avoid alcohol
- Elderly patients may have reduced muscle tone and increased risk of falls
